What did I do wrong?

Hello friends. I bought this monstera albo cutting two weeks ago, it was in water. When I got it home I put it in a nursery pot with a chunky orchid soil/perlite mix and watered it once with some fertilizer. I took it out today to see why it was so unhappy, and about half of the roots were rotten. I removed the rotten parts, but I don't understand why? Is it salvageable? Should I put it back in water?

The last picture is the day I potted it.

Don’t give up! It was likely a jarring change of environment then switching from water to soil.

I would remove any roots that are mushy, spray with hydrogen peroxide to eliminate any bacteria.

I’m sure others will have suggestions but. Would put in a perlite + water mix and let the roots regrow. Keep it somewhere warm and bright (cabinet or prop box).

Alternatively if you’re going to your cold season you may want to try and reroot in the chunky mix while the weather is still warm.

Same steps of removing mushy roots and spraying with hydrogen peroxide. Put in a clear pot that is just slighter bigger than the roots so you can monitor progress. Again, somewhere warm and bright and ensure there is airflow.

You want the soil to be moist to encourage root growth but not wet for long to avoid rot.

Albos can take awhile to push out new growth so just be patient!
