Bonsai

Pinus flexillis

This is my limber pine bonsai. Since I have become it's caretaker I have removed the wiring and stained the deadwood, but other than that have mostly left it alone. Is there any tips that anyone has on maintaining its style and appearance in the long term? Thanks!

It looks pretty good right now but this pine has the character and form of a literati; a fairly thin and winding trunk with all the branches in the upper section of the tree. As it is now I think the tree has too many branches and would benefit by losing some of them. I might would consider removing some of the longer, leggier branches and keep the ones with the foliage that’s still close to the trunk and which also enhances the flow and movement of the trunk. The trunk kinda gets lost under all the greenery and removing the excess will help showcase the trunk better and make your pine look like a much older and storm-battered tree.
