Plant Identification

what is this plant? it’s attracting so many bees

located in western NY

it’s a pretty large plant, sprouted from some weeds apparently. my sister said it grew really quickly. there were a ton of bees all over it which are not a problem, i just thought it was kinda neat to see.

also she has cats that sometimes go outside (harness and leash) so if this is something she should keep them away from please let me know! they wouldn’t be eating it but i know some flowers are not safe just to be around because of the pollen being toxic.

Goldenrod. There are lots of types. Native plant 🙂

Goldenrod some kind, *Solidago* species. Safe for dogs.

They are very important for a wide variety of pollinating insects as they provide a significant portion of late season nectar/pollen resources. Often considered keystone species up there with oaks.

    Edit: also safe for cats.

A lot of people incorrectly blame them for hayfever and pollen allergies, but their pollen is actually too heavy to stay in the air. Most pollen allergies this time of year are caused by ragweed, which often grows with goldenrod.

While there’re a couple species native to Eurasia, most are native to North America, and some like Canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) have become invasive in Europe.

It’s very similar to milkweed right?
