I stuck a broken tomato stem in some water probably a month ago to try and save it's tomato's and today I see this. The stem itself is mostly dead now but are those roots? I don't expect to save the stem, it's done it's job and I got most of the tomatoes to ripen, but I'm so curious about this; I didn't know tomatoes could do this.
I'm not trying to proplift this just thought you guys might be able to confirm my suspicions.

Prior to this I had been trimming and slicing into the stem to keep it free of rot and able to absorb water
