Garden Hack: Repurpose Sourdough Discard into Japanese Beetle Lure | Ferment Fruit Sourdough Discard



Today I’m gonna show you how to make some natural Japanese beetle bait attractant using sourdough discard, which is basically leftover starter that you don’t use when you’re baking bread.

First, we’ll need some sugar, some fruit – I’m gonna try these dates since they didn’t work out in my freeze dryer – and of course, the sourdough discard. We’ll also need a few buckets of water.

Alright, so I mixed up the dates, sugar, sourdough discard, and water together. Now I’m gonna let this mixture ferment out in the yard to see if it attracts any Japanese beetles. I might need to use a different lid to trap more beetles in there, but for now, I just wanted to see if this works at all.

The good thing about using sourdough discard as bait is that it’s completely natural. I don’t want any chemicals getting into my chickens, so this is a safe way to attract the beetles and then feed them to the chickens.

So there you have it! You can use leftover sourdough discard, some fruit, sugar, and water to ferment your own lures for flies and Japanese beetles. Just fish them out and feed them to your birds!
