Is my Silver Maple dying

This Silver Maple in our backyard is massive. We had it looked at roughly 7 years ago by an arborist because we wanted to remove it and they said it was healthy and they would trim it back. They removed some weight and some large limbs over hanging out home.

I'm noticing lately the bark looks bent, cracked, peeling, and twisted. Also some black spots on it. If it fell it would be very bad.

Is it time for it to come down?

  1. It looks like a normal old silver maple to me. Mine also looked similar before i took it down. Why i took it down was because it was shedding thigh-sized branches on my neighbor’s car and shed every time we had a storm.

The unfortunate reality is that silver maples aren’t strong trees. So the choice of removal will depend on what is underneath the tree.

  2. That is just normal bark activity. As the tree increases in diameter the older bark gets pushed outward creating that texture.
