You will want to repot it, but wait until it’s gone through dormancy (end of dormancy is the best time to repot). Every vft I’ve gotten from a big hardware store has a cloth around the roots. It’ll be ok for a while, but definitely get a bigger pot next year. Plastic, ceramic is ok if it’s glazed inside and out, no terracotta/clay, 5-6 inches tall. If you’re going to keep it outside, get a white or lighter color pot as black will retain heat.
