Gardening Austin

Should I put a thin layer of cardboard in the bottom of these new beds?

They are 12" deep for reference. I weeded the area and put down about 1-2 bags of topsoil to get them level. Should I put a thin layer of cardboard on the bottom to discourage weeds? If so, should I cut that cardboard up into a certain size, or keep the pieces as large as possible?
Planning to plant herbs, lettuces, kales and a few seed packets of lettuces, peas, maybe carrots.
1st garden of this type and size, wish me luck! TIA!

I’ve usually put cardboard down first before I put any type of soil, but I would assume you could still add more before adding soil on top.

In my experience grass will eventually find its way in, but it is easy to pull if you stay on top of it.
