What’s going on with my grape leaf Japanese maple?

It’s leaves all kind of burned up looking. But there is new growth. I kept it watered over the summer. This is its second summer.

Looks fine, just some summer uglies.

You could mulch it better and lose the stake.

it’s improperly planted and has been improperly maintained.

good news, you probably have adequate time to correct this

start by removing the nursery stake. this should have been done at time of planting. Next remove the turf grass from around the base of the tree.. this will hopefully expose some of the root flare. this should be done a couple feet out and then mulch that area keeping the mulch off the base of the tree. this will definitely help the tree as it won’t need to compete with the grass for nutrients and most importantly water.

last step, give the tree the water it needs . Stick your finger in the rootball area. if it’s wet, don’t water and check again tomorrow. when it needs water, water it deep, let it dry out and water again deep.

Inadequate establishment water. Turfgrass irrigation is inadequate in general, especially there. Remove turf and properly install a mulch ring, use real arborist wood chips, not the dyed crap in a bag. [Establishment watering guidelines](https://imgur.com/gallery/aoGGAaw). The nursery stake is removed at planting time.
