Pothos

New pothos owner with questions!

I obtained a pothos (I think it’s a golden pothos?) cutting recently and have searched this group and google and I’m getting conflicting information about several things.

I’m planning on keeping it in water as long as possible and not putting it in soil unless I have to. How often should I change the water? Some sources say weekly, some people say they rarely change it and just top it off.

How often should I put the liquid plant food in? There are directions on the bottle but they seem geared towards using it on edible plants so I’m not really sure?

I’ve had it about 6 weeks and it’s growing nicely roots and new leaves so I guess I’m doing something right. I’d like it to be a shorter, bushier plant, as opposed to long vines climbing or hanging down, if possible. Should I clip another piece from what’s already in the vase when it gets long-ish? (It’s actually 2 separate cuttings in the vase now)

Pic 1 is recent, pic 2 is when I got it, pic 3 is the plant food I bought. I’ve given the plant food just once so far.

Thanks! I really don’t know much about houseplants, this is really my first one!

Congrats! You are doing great. I keep my various pothos cuttings in water (always have) until they grow secondary roots (roots off of roots). I plant after that and have never once had an issue with successful growth. I change the water maybe 1-2x a week and have never added any fertilizer/growth hormone into the water. All I can say is that this has worked in my experience. One thing I have found to be true is cuttings with root/roots encourage new growth with cuttings in the same glass (this goes for other species, as well. It’s wild). Enjoy your new plant and best of luck!
