Fiddle Leaf Fig

Repotted and the roots are going crazy! What to do?

I recently repotted because the previous pot was too narrow on the bottom and it wanted to fall over when the soil was dry. I opted for a wider based pot but didn’t size up too much. When I took it out of the previous pot I removed most of the soil and really tried to pull apart the roots because I thought I could separate the trees (failed mission!). I noticed all the roots were very shallow and just a small ball, not at all what I expected for such a large plant! I covered the new pot’s drainage holes with a bit of cardboard and replanted with a new soil mixture. 2 weeks later everything is still looking healthy and happy! But there are roots growing out of the drainage holes like crazy! What do I do with them? The roots were so shallow and compact when I repotted that at first I thought something else must be growing from the new soil, but I’m pretty sure they are my fiddle leaf roots.
