Is it too late in the year to cut back this conifer?

The neighbours at the back of our garden have a line of conifers along the boundary, which are growing over into our garden.

We want to both shorten the height, and cut the face of the conifer back closer to the boundary.

Is it too late in the year now to do this? Google suggests that if you trim a conifer after summer, it is more likely to turn brown and ugly looking.

(I already know that trimming too far, beyond the green parts of the tree, results in it staying brown forever. I’m specifically worried about the time of year affecting the process.)

  1. Nah go for it those things are bullet proof. They also will grow to 70ft tall so I’d talk to the neighbour about getting them under control before they get so big you/they need professionals to do it.

Youve moved beyond that. I am very sceptical they can be cut back to (for example) the fence line, that should have been done probably 3 years ago, and they are too high to easily manage as DIY unless you or neighbour fancies going up a ladder with a chainsaw.

They need to be removed. Will cost a lot. As will anything else that makes a significant difference to them.

Cutting now is likely to expose the inner growth to scorch marks on the leaves from cold buffeting winds. It will be unsightly until next spring, when the new growth will eventually cover the scorch damage.
