what’s wrong with the cactus? is it salvageable?

Hi guys! First post here, figured you guys would know what's up. My grandparents have had this cactus for ages, and each year it just keeps getting worse and worse. Despite how it looks, it does still flower when it's put outside for the summer (most recently, last year). I don't know if I'm google searching wrong or not but I haven't been able to figure out what it is, the spots are all hard/crunchy, some of them peel off a bit if pushed. Any help here would be appreciated, if it's even able to be saved. It's really nice, super old, and by far taller than me, so preservation would be nice. Thanks y'all!!

Thank you for posting to r/plantclinic!

It looks like you may be asking about a cactus or succulent. In addition to any advice you receive here, please consider visiting r/cactus r/succulents for more specialized care advice.

A common problem with cacti and succulents is etiolation. This is when a succulent stretches or becomes leggy. Reply with “!etiolation” for advice.

It looks and sounds like corking IMO. Natural aging process. The r/cactus subreddit might be more helpful.
