A friend came around to help out with my garden last week but my climbing rose, which had green leafs, hasn’t responded well. It’s 3 years old and in the north of england. I bought it in memory of a family member so really keen to do what I can to save this .

It looks bare rooted to me, why isnt it planted in soil, be that a pot or the garden? Is there soem soil? Did it just get left and dry out for a week?

It also looks, sad to say, very very dead. has it been in that pot the whole time? 3 years?

You should have planted it I’m afraid.

If it’s been in that pot for 3 years I’m amazed you had green leaves at all recently. I would find the same rose, Golden Showers, and read about what conditions it likes and how they thrive and plant it somewhere it will be happy (even a more suitable pot, if it’s a kind that can be happy in a pot).

Roses can be quite hard work, but they’re so wonderful when they’re happy. I suggest that learning to keep a rose happy is the real gift your family member is giving you. Doing some reading and working it out is a way to keep that family member with you as you learn, irrespective of whether you can rescue this specific plant.

You appear to have starved it to death by leaving it in the tiny pot it was sold in for three years.

  6. Needed planting ASAP within 3 weeks – you are approx 153 weeks overdue

You haven’t said what you have done, I’m going to assume it’s been in the ground and you have recently dug it up to move it?

Either way, judging by the colour of the stems (almost purple/black) it looks like it’s picked up some sort of fungal disease and is quite probably a gonner.

In saying that, roses are quite tough. Cut it right back, remove all stems that are this dark purple/black in colour, and put it in a bigger pot, in a sheltered position, try not to let it get too wet, and see if it comes back next year.

Make sure you clean any tools/snips used on it to prevent any possibility of spreading the disease to other plants.
