Should I try to preserve this stump that has a tree growing off it?

I had to take this tree down in sept 2021, I decided to keep the stump at table level and over the past few years, this little tree has grown. It appears to be somewhat coming off the stump, but also has some base ground connection(shown in photos).

I’m trying to determine if I need to further preserve the stump, before it eventually starts rotting and softening up. It’s still pretty sturdy, but I’m at a lost as what to do to ensure the new tree has the best chance for success.

Thank you!

  1. Do you know if that is a hackberry tree? It would be helpful to know why you took down the original tree?

Reason I inquire – i had a massive hackberry tree in my yard that fell during the ice storm in 2022. It took out a major part of my patio and yard. We spend a lot of time and $ to clean it up. Anyways – not what you asked.

Hackberry trees grow fast and put off a ton of saplings – both from seed and roots. I would expect if you cut this stump down a bit lower to ground the new growth will be fine because hackberrys are pretty resilient. But beware of all the problems you will be signing up for. Hackberry tree branches are known to just snap and fall off – so it’s awesome for rapid growth, shade, etc – though you will be signing up for problems down the road (or someone else will be that inherits the tree)

Likely root sprouts from the Ash. Not really viable long term. Most of the Ash trees were decimated from the winter storm and with emerald ash borer on its way I’d say take it down and plant something else.
