Propagating tiny head of dracena corn plant?

I had a beautiful and thriving corn plant that I had on my rooftop during the summer. It was doing well until some animal came and chopped it up. Literally looked like a machete was taken to it 😩. The only seemingly salvageable piece was the top.

I’ve had it in water for a few weeks. Hasn’t died but hasn’t grown roots. Is this possible with such a small piece of the mother plant or will this eventually just rot and die without roots?

I don’t think it has/ had nodes on it so I’m unsure if it can even grow roots. Help!
