Greenhouse Gardening in Wisconsin: Growing food in April

In this video we’ll show you what we have growing in our greenhouse. We have lettuce, swiss chard, onions, and kale. We started some of our seeds directly in our greenhouse using a method called winter sowing. Most people will use milk jugs for winter sowing, but we use our greenhouse and it works just as great. We also started some seeds inside and hardened them off over the last couple of weeks and in this video we will be transplanting those into our greenhouse. We like to start seeds differently to experiment and see what works better. The main reason we set up our greenhouses was so that we could extend our growing season and have fresh food earlier in the season. We have two different greenhouses that we use, one is from Gardener’s Supply and the other one is from Amazon.

We try to grow all of our own food so we can be as self-sufficient as possible. We live in zone 5A in Southern Wisconsin and we live on less than one acre. Our main garden is about 1,000 sq. ft., we have raised beds, and we also grow food on our fence. It’s possible to feed your family from your own garden no matter how much space you have.

  1. Good video, Nora. I appreciate the experiments you do, I know it's a lot more work to setup and keep track of but it's very useful to us viewers. I'm looking forward to seeing your garden develop over the course of the season, don't hesitate to post even shorter videos, we'll watch them! Thanks.
