Forgotten cactus from previous habitants

Context: Hi! I just moved in into a new place as my previous rent contract ended. The previous habitants of the new place I’m renting left this old and huge cactus out by the door, and told the owner that we could have it if we wanted to. I’m a huge plant owner, and have a lot of experience with succulents but none with cactus.

Question: Anyone know what kind of cactus it could be? What it’s sun/water needs are? And it looks like its withering/rotting from the top, is there any way to treat this/save it from getting worse?

PS: I haven’t watered it since it’s been raining and it stays outside, is it being overwatered from the rain? It get indirect sunlight through the morning and direct sun for a few hours during the afternoons, but my city is usually cloudy. Also i don’t know if the pot has drainage! Will check and update soon.

Thanks in advance!!!

Thank you for posting to r/plantclinic!

It looks like you may be asking about a cactus or succulent. In addition to any advice you receive here, please consider visiting r/cactus r/succulents for more specialized care advice.

A common problem with cacti and succulents is etiolation. This is when a succulent stretches or becomes leggy. Reply with “!etiolation” for advice.

  2. Im leaning towards mexican fence post cactus.

If you grow a lot of succulents then you probably got the basics down. Good sunlight, high inorganic content soil, good drainage.

Is the top like mushy or just slim?

all the little dots might be a pest/disease issue. Its difficult to tell at the distance of the photo and might be nothing problematic.
