Alocasia Polly report: 2 months progress.

3️⃣ Light dictates the growth potential. Watering, fertilizing, etc. are only done to realize that potential.

The light situation that gave me this growth was 1-2 hours of direct sun and indirect light levels around 300-500 foot-candles most of the day – in other words, while the sun is not in the direct line of sight with the plant, the view of the sky and all outdoor surfaces that reflect the sun result in ambient light readings of around 300-500 FC.

Direct sun through a window comes in at around 3000-6000 FC so how am I getting 900 FC right now? *Thin clouds* act to diffuse the sun so it’s not as strong as 3000 FC but when lit by the sun, they are brighter than a clear sky when the sun is elsewhere. This is the principle used by commercial nurseries when they use shade cloth.

Link in profile: if you’re ready to optimize your plant care based light, I’ve compiled a list of plants and their “indirect light requirements” and “direct sun tolerance”

P.S. I kept the soil evenly moist and used 3-1-2 fertilizer each time I watered since I kept seeing new growth. Interior humidity has been 50-60% these days – I don’t have a humidifier, I’ve never misted, and I check moisture by lifting the pot. Light drives all of these things to work…
