Nursery said l need to cut off the thick branch and keep the central leader. Do I need to do that?

I don't want to cut off the thick branch because it looks so healthy. Is it best to cut it off or okay to leave it on?

    grafted tree?

looks to be rootstock. if you want the tree to be what you expect it to be, you would need to remove that branch

Tough call. Keeping it means more work on that limb. Removing it is shock, and then monitoring and more directional pruning.
