Orchids

What’s the normal amount of leaf loss for an orchid?

I got this phalaenopsis orchid in the beginning of may. It was flowering then, so I waited for it to stop flowering and cut the flower spikes to just above the node. I repotted it in fresh orchid bark. The pot may be a little too big, but I didn’t have access to another one and I really made sure that the potting medium is nice and airy.

So here’s my question. You can see on the second pic that the orchid is growing a new leaf and the bottom leaf is turning yellow. I know that’s normal for orchids. But it has already lost one or two leaves after flowering and before it started to grow that new leaf. Is that fine or should I be worried?

The roots look fine as far as I can see. I have watered it when the roots turn pale. Should I cut the flower spikes off? I have heard that they take a lot of energy from the plant. I live in Finland so the growing season has ended in August and I would say the orchid will receive some amount of medium light throughout the autumn and winter. It’s not likely it will flower from those same stems, right?

I’m not a new plant parent but this is my first orchid and I have researched a lot, but I’m still worried I will do something wrong 😀 So any advice would be appreciated!
