I might be in denial

Did I kill my pinxterbloom azalea? We transplanted in early spring, admittedly, we eviscerated a good portion of the root system, as it was growing in a huge clump of rocks so the roots were all over the place. We planted her and used root hormone. When I scrape the bark I don’t see green, most branches are snapping but some still have some give to them. Did we kill it? Is there anything I can do? I feel bad about it.

Looks not well, you’ll have to wait until next season to see if it buds out. Typically trees die post transplant from lack of water so it may have dried out. Need to be watered very frequently especially if in drier climate. Best to transplant late fall.
