Wikipedia tells me that possums live near area they can get easy food like trash cans and compost piles. I haven’t seen evidence of disturbance, but even if I did, should this bother me? Could it be dangerous to my dogs? Near Portland, Oregon, USA, if that matters.

They are very unlikely to carry rabies and not aggressive, despite their looks. The threat is to the possum.
If it keeps coming back you should consider covering your pile with wire mesh or something.
It’s probably just munching on the bugs that go in and out of your compost pile. They’re usually pretty wary of bigger animals, but probably best not to let your dogs get too close to them (they carry diseases and stuff).
