How should I change my plan?: Went to Reset Pavers. Found concrete and bricks underneath

I lifted up all the brick pavers that the last folks decided to set in straight soil.

When I went to dig up the soil,
I found random slabs of concrete and also more bricks under about two inches of the soil.

I think it makes sense to just go over it with sand and stone dust, tamp that so it’s even, then reset the brick path with stone dust.
Is there a better way to do that?

Or Do y’all think the brick/concrete underneath definitely needs to be removed first?

Original Plan:
Remove brick pavers
Dig 7 inches from surface
put a 50/50 mix of pea gravel and sand
Tamp it down
Set brick pavers back

Honestly, I think it’s a good time to pull it all up and run a more practical path straight from the steps to the other side of the mailbox. Then it would be done correctly, look better, and the path would be more practical.

I like it as is. I would clean out the grass, and add paving sand.

FWIW, my neighbors pulled up the pavers that were their sidewalk to the house and found another layer of pavers underneath. That layer was pretty level and in good shape – it was just 3″ below grade (they’d probably been there since the 1920s and the ground had risen during the years). The laid down enough sand on top of those pavers to reset the grade, then installed the paving they wanted. The sidewalk looks great 25 years on…

[omg i can’t see, my depth perception is terrible]

Pull em all up. clean – scrape. Grab a cold beverage and enjoy while you look at it at the next step. Then make the call. You know the bricks have to come out, that’s for sure.
