Lawn Care

You All Did This to Me

After two years of trying to overseed my half acre property by manually moving two sprinklers for over 4 hours a day, I couldn’t take it anymore. I’m in the transition zone, so the grass will dry out easily if I just let it be. My house doesn’t have an in-ground irrigation system, and I didn’t want to drop $20K to install one. Instead, I bought 18 sprinklers, 7 timers, nearly a quarter mile of hoses, and 1,000 small metal stakes to keep the hoses slightly off the ground (still installing those). I will earn my sweat equity by putting it up and tearing it down annually. My wife is a saint and my neighbors think I’m insane. I’m not a gambler or a smoker, but you all finally triggered the obsessive part of my personality, and I both love and hate you for doing this to me. Have a good one.

This looks like you could have just used that water powered tractor-sprinkler with 200 ft of hose.

I understand the commitment, but the stakes are a bit too much in my opinion.

I hope it all results in good grass though!

  3. Dude it’s ok.. lawn care is a hobby.. I do it because I like a fine looking lawn, and I’m retired..

Time is your friend.. knowledge is power and once you get the hang of it., it becomes a form of zen relaxation to putter around the yard… torturing weeds.. feeding and watering and mowing the grass..

You start to appreciate the look and feel.. the add little landscape touches..

The best part is the “ sit in the lawn chair after the work is done, have a couple beers and admire the results..

    I love it..

What are those metal support things and any two cents wisdom? Worth it/pos?

  5. How do you keep the water pressure up? When I’d try to have two sprinklers going off the same faucet it doesn’t work too well.

Lol I appreciate the contempt in the title. Because of this and other Lawn subs, now every time I go for a jog or walk by other peoples lawns, I think “A little 2,4-D would do you some good,” or “Oof, better get that creeping charlie under control.” I hate it.

Haha good work. You could in the future just rent a trencher for a day or something and trench your own sprinkler lines. They’re all basically just irrigation tubes. You can probably do it all yourself with some sweat equity.

I’m just in this subreddit casually and not a diehard like you and a lot of other posters.

I don’t mean to rag on you but I feel like this post raises existential questions about what, like, the point of a lawn is. This setup doesn’t look attractive. You can’t have a party on it. You can’t play a sport on it or run around with your kids on it.

I guess I appreciate the dedication it takes to get serious about a hobby. But this reminds me of those people who get so addicted to plastic surgery that they massacre their faces, or so obsessed with growing their nails long that they can’t use a keyboard or clean themselves on the toilet anymore.

At some point, does the process of the hobby totally eclipse the expected benefit?

Love the dedication. Give us an update when the finished product is ready.

I feel you. I did something similar last year, but smaller and without the hose hangers. My bucket-o-sprinklers and pile of hacked up flexilla hose have been well worth the price. I have 1 acre of lawn and 3/4 acre dense woods I’m cleaning up. I just pick 4-6k sq ft each year and baby it for a while.

I understand how you felt when it came to moving sprinklers lol. I have around 1/2 acre of lawn and no irrigation but was helped a ton by recent rain so the seedlings have started. It’s not supposed to rain until the end of October where I live in Virginia so I’m going to be doing a ton of moving the sprinklers around. I can only do this because I WFH.
