What do you mean neglected? If it is yours fix it up.

Old family farm has not been lived in since 80s, and has only been used as a summer home. My dad is current owner, and I’m helping fixing up the house so you can stay there during winters.

While fixing up the place there have been some moments where I just want to drop everything, and move in on a permanent basis. I can feel a true connection to the place. These are my roots.

There isn’t really a lot of land. About 4-5 acres of farmable (1.5 acre of which has to be cleared again). The soil there on the other hand is really quite good and can easily be used for vegetables (historically). Watering is a non-issue, quite the opposite in fact, managing the several streams and drainage is a struggle.

There are fishing rights (trout and the rare salmon) and hunting rights (moose, roe deer and deer). And there is about 75 acres of quite productive forest.

The farm is about 15 minutes by car from a population centre of 40k people with every facility. The lake in front of the farm is very slightly brackish and connects to the ocean.

Is it even realistic to dream about a simple life there?

Given that you’re right on a lake – I’d probably build a sauna close to the water first. After that depends on what you want to do with the land. Looks like many options are available to you.

Reddit, should I take this perfect property that my dad owns?

excuse me but … what? I’d be moving in before nightfall.

  6. I’d sell it to me for pennies on the dollar to take this burden off your hands
