4 year development of native landscaping in SWFL

Since it’s about to all get washed away again I thought I’d share my native landscaping project that I’ve been working on. I started about 4 years ago with some soil amendments and about 50 native plants. No irrigation or fertilizer has been added, and only once was composed mulch added in. It was amazing to see how well it did with such little care. I’m only able to come and do work on it about twice a year so this is a very low maintenance project. About 2 years in the plantings were hit with a category 4 hurricane and submerged under 5’ of salty storm surge. I reseeded with a “native mix” that turned out to not be native , but Mother Nature took care of that and the nonnative died off. It’s now been 2 years since and the yard looks more alive than ever. A rabbit and two gopher tortoises moved into the front yard and I love seeing native species finding food and shelter in what used to be sand. It’s forecasted to get another 5’ surge with Milton but it will fair much better than the house I expect.
