Had to take down a red oak a couple weeks ago and in so doing dropped some logs on the fence line that butts up against a bunch of black elderberry I’ve had growing on the property since forever. Now that it’s opened up and I’ve gone back in there it’s actually really impressive how well established they are.

I’m curious if someone could give me a rundown on black elderberry and maybe give me some tips on figuring out about how old some of these gals are. I’ve got about 12 to 15 clusters like these and was thinking of throwing down some cardboard and mulch from the oak so we can walk around them next year.

Anything in particular I should know about keeping care of these?
