From what I can gather from the many websites offering advice on plant diseases, this is leaf curl, which affects stone fruit trees, and it seems I’m too late this season to do anything about it 🤔

This looks like Peach Leaf Curl. It’s carried in the air and the tree will catch it via the rain. Some years it may rain at just the wrong time as the leaves are developing and it can be bad. My peach tree gets it every year (some years worse than others) but it doesn’t do the tree any major harm. People have been known to completely cover their trees in the spring to avoid it.
