What's this plant

Urgent: my dog ate these seeds today. Does anyone know what plant they are from?

Hey all, hope Reddit can jump in and help me in a stressful moment – my dog is puking tonight and it occurred to me that I had caught him snacking on this weird seed pod in the yard. Do you know what it is and is it toxic??

Location would be useful. If you’re in the northern USA, it looks like a black locust pod. They are toxic. I would take your dog to the vet.

I am in Illinois!! Sorry can’t figure out how to add to main post right now. Loading dog into the car because we are worried it is either black locust or coffee bean tree.

    Edit: Kentucky coffee tree bean

Kentucky coffee tree is my guess. Only other trees in the area that make a pod similar to that are eastern redbud, Black locust, and honey locust. Redbud and Black locust have much much smaller pods. Honey locust has a much more slender pod and is typically a little longer.

Not sure on the toxicity of Kentucky coffee tree. It is mildly toxic to humans if consumed raw. I’d consult a vet.

Gymnocladus dioicus, Kentucky Coffee tree. Mildly toxic to humans, I don’t know about dogs though. It’s a bit of a diuretic (it’s how it was spread) but it can have some serious side effects on people
