Native Plant Gardening

Any love for Canada Hawkweed?

Hieracium umbellatum (aka Canadian / narrowleaf / northern hawkweed).

Got some volunteers in my yard. Seek / iNaturalist says native & threatened; BONAP says native & rare in my area (SE Pennsylvania / metro Philly).

It’s not unattractive with its yellow flowers (though probably looks “weedy” to some), has fluffy dandelion-like seeds. I’ve been collecting seeds as they mature, and I’m considering transplanting them (they’re perennials) to a spot where they won’t antagonize the neighbors with their fluff. Now that it’s on my radar, I see it around my neighborhood, so I don’t know how rare it really is. Seems to tolerate terrible soil & drought.

Any thoughts?

I like hawkweeds, there are so many different species that are adapted to many different habitats, so you can basically grow them anywhere. They are just difficult to find seeds for, but this year I collected seed from Hieracium scabrum that I hope to grow.
