Help me save my sad, sad pothoses

Hello plant physicians!

I have these two pothos in rough shape. I inherited them from a friend who moved overseas a couple of years ago. They’ve been doing great until three months ago when I tried to fertilize them for the very first time using a discount fish poop fertilizer from Marshall’s (great idea, I know). After that it developed a layer of scum on top of the water. I took the plants out of the bottles and washed them out, then put them back with clean water. I put a little bit of a different house plant fertilizer in with the water. No more scum but since the discount fertilizer debacle the middle leaves are turning yellow and dropping, and the new leaves are curled up. The window in this room is eastern facing if that makes a difference.

Please help me save these poor pothos guys! I am thinking of putting them in temporary containers and running the bottles through the dishwasher. I’ve thought of cutting off the end and letting it grow new roots maybe? But I know this is a bad time of year for pruning. What say you all? Thanks

oh nooo change the containers, change the water (it needs to be perfectly clear all the time!)

i would also cut off the parts that have leaves and propagate them again

Well the good thing about Pothos is that they are resiliantly fast growers. If it comes to the worst, you can snip the stem into segments and have yourself multiple new plants in no time. Ive chopped and propped my pothos a LOT. I now grow them all over my house, in soil and also water.

Here’s an image of one of my prop pots. I add a few drops of seaweed fertiliser in the water(thats why its tinted brown). My pothos and Adansonii love it. I change up the water every 1-2 weeks. Also wash rinse out the props and clean any debris when I do so. Maybe give that a try once you have root growth on your newly cut stems. They also do fine in unfertilised water, but they grow *really slow* Best of luck!

    Edit : fixed typos!

I grow pothos and philo in water (and only started using fertilizer, hydro specific, last week. Prior to, just tap water)

Dirty water is your main problem, and unkempt roots may be secondary. I fully change my water every 1-2 wx, rinse well the vase and lightly agitate and rinse roots. Monthly or so, I thoroughly wash and rinse my vases and trim roots.
