  1. Gardening-adjacent question from Zone 8b Central MS: Is there ANY effective method for killing or even repelling Fire Ants? They are residing IN my beds. As in, no noticeable mounds, just hanging/hiding out in/under the mulch (pine straw, shredded pine bark, cypress – doesn’t seem to matter). Suspect they may be attracted to the moisture (too hot/dry not to water), but stepping or reaching in to dig, deadhead, cut, weed, move a hose, etc. inevitably garners an attack. I have – no joke – tried every product sold at Lowe’s & Home Depot + a few from Amazon (>$100/mo & >1/wk application since early March) with ZERO progress. At best, they may move a few feet. Often, they don’t respond at all.

  2. Most perennial Salvia seem to come out of dormancy by having new growth sprout from their root systems. Mystic Spires Blue Salvia (zone 7 hardy) doesn't want to do that for us here in Central Texas (8b). The new growth comes from the old main stem at the root crown. In this regard, Mystic Spires acts more like a shrub than a perennial. The problem for us is the windy days in March will cause the new growth to separate from the old growth and die back. What would be causing this? (pruning, watering, mulching, etc.)

  3. Hi from Houston zone 9! Can you plant perennials in a wood chip bed if you distance the wood chip from the base of the planting?

  5. Can you more barberry now in zone 7a, we've already had a few frosts
ThanksJim. As always, love your content.

  6. Do you have a list of all the botanical gardens you have visited? I’d love to have that as a reference as we get closer to traveling and retirement.

  7. Thank you so. much for answering my question about when to plant the butterfly bushes. I thought this may not be the right time, but the nursery said yes plant now. Since I am getting 7 I do not want to lose them! Z 7b-8a MS.( I will check to see if they are dormant)

  8. Hi Jim. Richmond, VA Zone 7. A squall knocked a major (and heavy) tree limb down onto the front porch and foundation plant bed and sat on top of a 4 yr old Pugster buddleia for several days. When it was removed the buddleia was severely leaning to one side and resisted my efforts to set it upright. At this point it's been like that for about two months and I don't know what to do. It's still been putting out new blooms and the newly exposed lower branches started putting out green leaves. There are some damaged branches that I can prune off but the buddleia's overall appearance is too wonky to be as attractive as it once was. I don't like the idea of digging it up and tossing it out but I will if you think replacement is my better option.

  9. How do worms make their way into container plantings? Even Containers that are lifted on feet as well. Do u deal with ant mounds in your home gardens?

  10. Hello Mr. Putnam, I'm in Dallas, Texas zone 7b and wondered about using perennial Chrysanthemums in the garden. Is now the time to plant Chrysanthemums directly in the garden or should I overwinter the plants and wait in the spring? Any tips for care would be greatly appreciated!
    Many thanks🪴💚🪴

  11. Hey Jim, hope your travels are well. I just travelled to NC to visit family and had a question regarding their tree. We planted a flamethrower redbud last year and in zone 7a west NC and it’s lost its color. Still leafy but not showy. It’s in a part-shade location under an established oak. Other flamethrowers in the area look great in full sun. Do you think moving it now would be beneficial or would it be best to wait until spring?

  12. New construction, Middle Tennessee, zone 7b, heavy clay soil. The woods behind my house were originally self shading, but since my lot was cleared they take full sun. The forest floor is being overrun by weeds and invasive vines (Japanese Honeysuckle). Is there anything I can plant on my side of the property line to give the native trees and shrubs a chance at competing? I'm thinking ground cover or evergreen screening plants to provide shade. The woods are to my north, but far enough from the house to take full sun.

  13. on your last question. could be a large piece of debris hit the tree and knocked the bark off. but you would have to know more info about the situation. saw plenty of that after katrina.

  14. Hi there, my question is about the short japanese holly shrubs. I planted them right before summer heat wave and the south facing side dropped all the leaves. The other side of the plant is green and healthy. What can I do to help the plant grow back?

  15. Hi Jim! My neighbor has some species barberry and i have a few hybrids that are supposed to be sterile like orange rocket and golden rocket. But they also have some red seeds on them. Sterile? How do i know? Zone 6b/7a Ohio Great Lakes region

  16. Your Q&A's are incredible.

I've avidly gardened for 50+ years, yet I ALWAYS learn something and often several things listening to them.

  17. We have an Ozark Witch Hazel that is almost in full shade. It turned a luminous red in spite of no rain since the beginning of August.

  18. If seeds need a cold stratification to germinate, do the plants that they produce need a cold period to come back the following year? I have some small Red Birds in a Tree (Scrophularia macrantha) that I started from seed and they are still pretty young plants so I was planning on keeping them in my greenhouse all winter and planting them in the garden next spring. I’m in zone 8a in the pacific nw.

  19. Question about Stellar Ruby Magnolia. I'm in zone 6a. I found a 3 gal tree at HD and planted it. Is there a chance it could get killed to the ground during a rogue "arctic blast"? It's in a fairly protected spot.

  20. Question: I want to underplant a 4 year old Empress of China dogwood tree. Recommendations of what will help the dogwood, rather than compete with it. How far away from the trunk should I plant? Athens, Ga zone 8A

I do have deer. Thanks! Always appreciate your good advise.

  21. Hey Jim! Plant zone question. I know the plant zones are based on the average cold temperatures, but being down here in zone 9a FL, what should I think about when seeing plants only hardy down to zone 8? For some reason this confuses the heck out of me 😝 Can I not grow plants that are labeled zone 4-8 because it doesn’t get that cold down here? Thanks for all you do!

I have 3 Emperor II red maple trees and 2 of them keep sending up 8-10 mostly leafless branches extending 3-4ft above the main tree. Last year I waited until the trees lost all their leaves to trim them back. Is there anything I can do to keep them from doing this? Thanks! Zone 8 Birmingham, AL

  23. QUESTION: Hi Jim! I just had 2 huge old holly trees removed and stumps ground out at my foundation corners. They were taller than my house. I'd like to plant 2 Forever Goldy Arborvitaes exactly in their place and there isn't much wiggle room because of the corner placement on my home. How would you suggest I prepare the planting holes with the stump grinding being so fresh?

  24. A bit niche, but if I take out the limestone rocks in my aquarium, could putting it in the garden be detrimental? I changed which fish I'm keeping and need to take out the rocks but I don't know what to do with them 😅
