I thought I’d be doing a cleanup harvest and composting my pepper plants by now. Cool weather with lows in the 30s, and two frost days came to my area. The dang biomass in my GreenStalks kept my peppers going through the cold weather, and they survived the frost without damage. They are still putting out flowers and peppers.
Heat has returned to my area with daytime highs in the low to mid 80s, and nighttime lows in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Really, the pepper plants should be going into my compost bin by now. Other than continuing to harvest peppers, I am at a loss as to what to do. As long as they keep producing, I’ll continue caring for them.
My cabbage is starting to head up. I have Swiss chard, Komatsuna, and Yellow Heart Winter Choy that are ready to harvest. That means I need to make room for it. I’ve started processing tomatoes, peppers, onions and garlic, and have made eight pints of salsa, and nine pints of tomato sauce thus far. I have more tomatoes thawing with seven gallons to tomatoes to go. I have a lot of diced peppers too, so will probably be making a batch of pepper jelly too.
Next spring, I’ll probably reduce my pepper crop by half. I use a lot of diced peppers in cooking and salads, but forty quarts for two people is a bit much, and I am still harvesting peppers. Ugh! I guess there are worse things to complain about, like the heat.
When in doubt about soil medium/amendment, test some fast sprouting plant in a cup and wait a week or two…
Can I cover my framed bed with garden fabric. I use it to prevent weeds.
