My Winter Care Secrets For Healthy Productive Fruit Trees

On today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share my winter care secrets for healthy, productive fruit trees! Caring for fruit trees over winter is critical to their health and success, because many fruit trees recharge over winter. However, caring for evergreen fruit trees and caring for deciduous fruit trees require different techniques. This guide explains it all, including when to fertilize fruit trees in winter and when to avoid fertilizing trees entirely.

  2. Great information, Anthony. I always look forward to your videos. Fellow North Carolinian and future Floridian if all goes well for me.

  3. Because I only watch you and two other gardening channels, do you think you could do a blueberry winterizing prep?

  4. In new england we are surrounded by oak forests and the leaf litter is great for raking onto the shrub beds as insulation protection. In spring we rake them back again to allow the sun to warm the soil.
I once heard a Pennsylvania guy describe fertilizing his apple trees this way:
He harvested his meat birds on site in summer under the shade of the apple trees. The next year the apples were numerous and huge. So during the year I empty packaging which had held raw meat into a small bowl of water and I water our fruit trees with them.

  5. Thank you for the information. We have 4 citrus tree ( Mackenzie Farms) and the Stewart avocado that will have its first winter. I was wondering how many pickle water barrel you have for your Lila, Satsuma and Meyer lemon for the winter? We have purchased a greenhouse from Amazon but I know we need additional heating source for night time temps. We are going to add the Christmas lights you previously suggested also. Our trees are planted on South side of the house by fence. Just wondering how many water barrels we need. We have a 15ft x 7ft spacing. Thank you for all the help.

  6. Thanks Anthony! How about watering the different trees during the fall and winter? I planted a bunch of new fruit trees and berry bushes and a couple of citrus that are in pots in my garden this year (this is my first year doing any gardening) so I'm not entirely sure if I should water them as much as I do in the spring/summer. I'm still watering at least every other day, mostly once a day and they've been doing great. Now I think I shouldn't water as much when it gets colder. Im in zone 7B and it's still in the 80s for the highs and 50s for the lows currently. Im scared with the deciduous trees, there wont be any leaves on the trees so it wont be as easy to tell if the tree needs water. I really want to give them the best shot to thrive in the Spring so Im definitely nervous about taking care of them in the fall/winter. Thanks!

  7. Awesome! How do you typically gauge how much water your citrus and avocado needs in fall and winter months?
