Zero Waste Gardening: The Power of a Closed-Loop System! (Garden Talk #153)

In this episode of Garden Talk, I interview Alexandria aka Queen of the Sun Grown. She has been on the podcast twice before, episodes 30 & 82, and she’s back again this time to talk about closed-loop gardening. She talks about things such as composting, ecological gardening, utilizing animals, IPM, and many other things that relate to creating and working in a closed-loop system. What plants do you like to grow? Lettuce, tomatoes, kale, bok choy, carrots, peppers, let us know in the comments section below. If you enjoyed this video please click that thumbs up button 🙂

  1. Remember when you could sell an ounce to a friend for $300-$400? With dispensaries selling them on-sale for $125…zero-waste savings is responsible both environmentally and financially.

  2. Hahahahhahahahaha!!!! I love it!!! Parent hood is the best but boy does it change your garden habits. Keep up the solid work chris. And thanks for the amazing info Mrs sungrown!!

  3. I live in a small rural town, and we are allowed to have 4 chickens but no roosters. I have a 45'x120' back yard with two VERY large maple trees, 2 scotch pine, and a few Sumac trees. The best spot in my tard in a 40x 40 area that gets full sun from sunrise to sunset. We just moved and in I covered 20×20 with all the years of deadfall sticks/leaves that was under the trees. 2 bales of straw, 10lbs of neemsead meal, 10 lbs of crabmeal, 10lb of kelp meal, and 20 lbs of malted barley. I sprinkled what little bit of what Bokashi my indoor garden could spare on top and covered it all with a tarp. Next spring I will readd more seedmea,l 200 lbs worm castings, and plant my veggie garden. I'm gonna buy my 4 chicks from the local Mennonite church and let my grandaughter be in charge of them. I have always 'cold' or static composted. Thats my plan to help feed myself during the apocalypse.

  4. Not all poop created equal. When she says poop in pellet form not to high in nitrogen and some doesn't need to much composting I think of deer in the wild for they poop out pellet form of waste and good natural fertilizer for the wild never thought about waste composting in such a way in gardening until now.

  5. I can listen to Alex for hours at a time, she's full of great living soil knowledge / She has some great classes too! Growes love……..

  6. You can always just harvest and clean alpaca wool and sell it in bulk. Maybe find someone to make a free throw or something for ya one day as a thanks.

  7. Can you ask her where she gets the blend of fungus for spraying the plants in September for powdery mildew detritus and caterpillars and caterpillars
