All For Gardening: Preen with Hydrangeas?

Just planted a new landscaping bed in the front yard and I’m looking at options for controlling weeds in the mulch bed. I planted Pieris japonicas, Rhododendrons, hostas and Hydrangeas. I was reading the lable for Preen and it seems that “Preen Weed Preventer” is not labeled for use around Hydrangeas but other sources online state the opposite, and that it can be used on Hydrangeas.

They do have a product called “Preen Vegetable Garden Organic Weed Preventer” that is safe for hydrangeas but it requires more frequent applications and does not control as many weeds.

I’m inclined to follow the manufacturers recommendations and use the natural stuff but I wanted to see if anyone had tried using it one way or the other.

I also have prodiamine that I use for my lawn, I wonder if that would be safe for my plants…
