    It isn’t termites, which prefer dead wood to tunnel through. It looks like your tree was badly wounded years ago; the tree tried to encapsulate the wound so it could heal, but the exposed wood started to dry out or rot (can’t tell). It looks to me that you’ve got woodpeckers or sapsuckers (depending on where you are) looking for insects in the dried out area.

    I recommend calling an ISA certified arborist who can tell you if the tree is salvageable.
