4 Types of Japanese Garden Design | Large and Small Garden Ideas From Traditional Japanese Gardens

If you are like me there’s something that draws you into the Japanese garden, but you can’t always explain what it is.

In the beginning, I was intrigued, but also sort of confused in a way because I was lumping different styles of gardens together. It wasn’t until I began more seriously researching Japanese gardens and undergoing an apprenticeship in Osaka and Fukui that I began to grasp the differences in the 4 types of Japanese garden design.

I’m hoping that as we go through these 4 styles it brings about some clarity as well as inspiration for your own garden designs.

Some believe that by definition you can only create a Japanese garden within Japan, which may be true in a technical sense. But I believe that you can create the essence of a Japanese Garden in your space, wherever that is, by adhering to the traditional principles that have guided Japanese landscape architects for centuries.

Decide Your Japanese Garden Style –

A good starting place for designing your Japanese garden is to decide what style of garden you are interested in and will it best fit the intended space. Traditionally most Japanese gardens can be divided into four main styles including the Japanese Strolling Garden, the rock garden, the courtyard garden and the tea garden or hermitage garden. Some of these styles definitely overlap and you can blend different elements together to create your garden…

  1. Thanks for the video! I am studying about the japanese garden and his cultures and you are helping me alot, thanks man!

  2. Thank you for this. I live in a condo with an adjacent raised garden that is 30" above ground, and an irregular shape approx. 7' x 9'. I'm trying to create a Japanese-style garden within those confines. Fortunately, the background includes a beautiful dogwood tree and evergreens. The Tsubo-niwa is the obvious choice, and I'm attempting to keep it simple – not an easy task for a plantaholic! Thx again

  3. Knowledgeable, but it's a shame you constantly look slightly angry 😠. A smile would help things along a lot and improve the viewing experience overall.

  4. Không phải cô đơn mới nhớ bạn mà là vì nhớ bạn nên mới cô đơn. Sở dĩ cô đơn nặng nề đến vậy là do bạn quá béo.

  5. I grew up in Yokohama for 16 years. and want to do something on this property in the states. Just on a way bigger scale ⚖️

  6. This is such a wonderful primer. I am now thinking how best to improve (or rather restore) my garden in Tokyo. The woman who built the house spent a lot of time thinking about little details and there are lots of decisions for me as to if/how I should keep her layout or change to something new.

  7. 1. The Japanese Strolling Garden (Kaiyu-Shiki) 2. Zen/Rock Garden (Karesansui) 8:20 3. The Courtyard Garden (tsubo-niwa) 4. The tea garden/Heritage Garden (Rogi) . thanks
