  1. One of the problems with your design is that soil / or whatever compost or feed you use as a fertilizer can come into contact with the water and turn it anaerobic . Plants can just about put up with this but it’s not advisable for health reasons . You are almost there with your design but it needs tweaking . Have the water tested on the over flow and you will see what I mean . Edited. When I first started wicking beds ten years ago following YouTube designs they were very basic and not what I wanted. Very simulator to yours . Don’t get me wrong as I have already said you are almost there . My beds are made up of three tanks joined together with pipe that hold 30 gallons of water and covered with shade cloth stapled around fruit crates with an overflow directly from the tanks to the outside . I use a cheap substrate peat packed around the tanks and then potting peat on top of the tanks . Once a year I use a rabbit pellet compost and cover that with a good peat . I am quite lucky where I live as I have three stroke four growing seasons in a year depending on what I am growing.

  2. I'd love to see you connect all the pvc fill tubes to a central PVC line, connected to a hose; so you can just turn on a hose and fill all the buckets at once. best of luck.

  3. Seems like a great idea. Question? What about root rot. Since the soil is sitting in water won’t it rot out the roots?? Thanks in advance.

  4. I was under the impression it was impossible to overwater using self wicking method. I'm hopeful you can weigh in on this. I have three Japanese Tanyosho Pines in large 36"x36" cubes. The reservoir holds 25 gallons. I have them in place for 3 months, and every time i put the water meter on it, it reads WET. On other regular containers it reads well into dry or lower end of moist after same period of time. The Tanyosho's are B&B and in a very lightish mix…it is faintly moist to the touch within the first several inches. Could it be drowning them afterterall? I have 3/4" rope wicks that are very effective, with a core that absorbs water very well. I have them run all the way to the top of the pots. Should they be taken out, or cut lower, or what do you think?

  5. Love your videos! Can you do one on how you compost and the size and strategy behind it? Thanks so much!

  6. I'm not seeing how it will wick. The water reservoir and the air flow pipes are covered by the cloth, then the soil is in the cover. How do the soil and the water ever meet in order wick water into the soil?
    What did I miss?
Are you saying the fabric is the wick?
