How to Garden Like a Master Gardener

It isn’t hard to garden like a master gardener. Master gardeners are considered gardening experts, but they are just regular gardeners who have had extra training. With a few simple tips, every gardener can become a master gardener. Gardener Scott discusses how to take your gardening to the next level by learning, practicing, and questioning gardening practices. (Video #150)

  1. I had problem with bamboo. My Neighbor had a yard full of Bamboo. I have a 6 foot tall brick fence between his house and Mine. I put in a 25 foot driveway between my yard and his, and I had a small garden area on the far side of the 25 foot driveway. The bamboo roots made it way under the brick fence, and under the 25 foot driveway to the small flower bed. I contacted a Master Gardener, and asked him how to get the bamboo from invading my yard, and he responded by saying "Move". You will never get rid of it.

  2. Time to start researching to find out if Canada has a Master Gardener program!
    Thanks, Scott!

  3. Great video! Gardening is trial and error with some success too. I go out to my garden every day to see Mama Gaia’s blessings to me. She most certainly returns the love you give her. Thank you!

  4. Luckily we have YouTube these days! The info is here if we want it, and much easier to access and therefore achieve higher levels of expertise. This video was definitely a confidence boost.. thank you!

  5. Double digging my garden plot I saw an earthworm do something I had never seen before. After I wrenched it out of the ground it laid still in a jagged profile. I've seen plenty worms disturbed before but never acted like this. Later that night I remembered how many snakes will play dead by going jagged. Snakes go flat and jagged to look dead and dried out. The only thing different in the worm was not going flat. But they have no skeleton so I doubt it would work. I'm no worm expert but I'm satisfied that's what I saw. A worm playing dead. Now I know what a mistake it was not to take a picture.

  6. One of my neighbors has a bee hive. I get tons of the bees around my soaker hoses. It's been awesome for the garden.

  7. So it is true.bees do need a water . Source.i asked around but got no answers. Thankyou for leting me no. My question. How do I give. Honey bees and bumblebees the right nutrients thay need. Honey bees and bumblebees the first video you talked about how Important it is to give a good home to the. Bumblebee
The second video can be on nutrition for the Bees

  8. The MG program seems to vary radically from state to state. I wasn't impressed with the program here in my state. The program seem old and antiquated.

  9. Hey! I had a quick question about a fruit tree I’m am planting within the next couple of days. A couple inches down from where the tree will be sitting in the hole, there is a huge rock. I know there are random big rocks throughout my soil and I have grown other trees. Just the thing is they have never been directly in the hole. Will the roots be ok or do you think it will be an issue? Thanks!

  10. My biggest problem right now is pill bugs and aphids. Is there a way to get rid of those things? Because the pill bugs eat the strawberries and the aphids are messing up my tomato plants

  11. I really appreciate this video. Thank you for taking the mystic out of what a "Master Gardener" really is. I will commit to learning as much as I can on what I need to know to do what I need to do. But will probably pursue Master Gardener certification in the future.

  12. My wife and I have been watching your videos recently about covering your vegetable garden with a thick layer of mulch to retain the moisture and for weed control. What is the procedure for planting and seeding in the following years? Do you rake off the mulch entirely to replant and seed, and then reapply once the plants and seeds are established? Do you have a video that shows what to do or how you do it? We are enjoying your videos and were also wondering what growing zone you are in. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your channel.

  13. I had one tomato plant nipped with frost. It did damage to the outer leaves as well as the growth leaves. The overall plant seems to be growing,
and putting on suckers. Should I prune the damaged foliage? Can I use the top sucker as a main stem?

  14. Just stating the obvious Scott, but the Internet and specifically YouTube has taken us so far from the days of hunting down books in the library. I feel like we were in the dark ages. So yes, we can learn at a level of master gardener or any other discipline.

  15. I do want you to know, that I did not move, and I got rid of the bamboo. All I did was every time a shoot shot up, I broke it off at the ground. Now this was large bamboo shoots the size of my wrist, and would grow a foot in a day. They all just disappeared after doing this everyday for a year.

  16. Scott thank you so much for all of your videos. You have truly been an inspiration to me and my garden! All of your advice is greatly appreciated.

  17. 👍🏽👊🏽great info as always and thank you for sharing. We research and test out what we have learned to make sure that it will work in our environment and within the context that we want.

  18. Ho Scott! I have a question that might make a good video subject. Why are we told that Epsom Salt is good for some plants, but table/rock salt is awful and will kill plants?

  19. I am a Certified Master Gardener but never consider myself an expert or a Master of Gardening. I am always learning new methods and receiving tips on a daily basis. Love the YouTube gardening community. ❤️🌷

  20. sorry for puting this question where it doesnt belong, i wanted to ask you Scott if you can give me some tips about good and bad neighbours for soy and naut, i need to put them into ground but i couldnt find anything online. thanks

  21. I appreciate your humility and kindness sir. It almost feels like a rare trait these days, but it's something I've been striving for in my life.

  22. Wonderful video! Knowledge is everything. I hope to be a "master" gardener thanks to people like you.🌺🌼🌾

  23. Hey Gardener Scott I have a question about wattle weaved raised bed. I'm building a raised bed using wattle weaving there are spaces in the weaving should I line the inside of the weaving with a plastic lining?

  24. This was a truly inspiring video and I thought for some days about in which area I might want to become an expert in one particular aspect of gardening. My first thought was to become an expert in tree pruning. However, after realizing my opportunities might be limited when it came to actually pruning trees, (as I would avoid any climbing or ladders), I hit upon propagation and learning all I can about how to propagate different species, starting with cuttings and working my way up to grafting. Or learning all about fungus, And cultivating mushrooms! So many different directions and I’m not sure where I might end up but in the meantime, I will explore!!

  25. For Master Gardener certification should be based on your preference. Rather someone that truly masters vegetables or just perennials. Someone usually masters one thing before moving to the next. Colorado definitely is having a weird season. Last year we were growing in the ground third weekend of March. Me and my family have been growing veggies and fruit in our garden and green house for the last 5-6 years, and probably another 5 years with a hot house and garden before that.
