HOW TO START A CONTAINER GARDEN FOR BEGINNERS | COMPLETE GUIDE TO CONTAINER GARDENING IN CANADA

One great way to start a garden or build a garden with limited space is with containers. Container vegetable gardens have benefits and can increase your yields dramatically if done correctly. In many cases it is a great idea to try a container garden even if you already have a regular garden set up.

Ashley is an agronomist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are YouTube, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s YouTube channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her YouTube channel as well as her reach to up and coming gardeners.

  1. My wife has 2-tier container for smaller flowers on the patio that seems to work well. We bought large potato grow bag for our 6 year old grand-daughter for here at the house…she lives with us so she is into gardening with us. We thought that would be fun for her and it won't take up as much room as it did last year in one of our raised beds lol. But, anyway, thanks for the info. You gave a lot to think about if we decide on more containers.

  2. Thank you sooooo much! I am going to try planting loofah and goji berries in cloth containers (16”x 24”) do you have any special advice ?

  3. Commenting from the tropics! High heat, high humidy and rainstorms. I can only grow in containers and this has made me think of using gunny sacks made from jute as a grow bag. They are sold here and are cheap. Overheating is a big problem for me and at the same time, the rainstorms drown the plants. When there is no rain, the plants need to be watered at least once a day regardless whether its in a plastic pot or not. So I am thinking of experimenting with gunny sacks made of jute.

  4. I was looking for the video on safe plastic pots but YouTube search wasn't exactly helpful. Would you mind linking it??

  5. Hi, I also live I Canada I was wondering if I could grow broccoli and cauliflower? What would be the best way I could? Love your channel!

  6. Something I saw with container gardens is the soil freezes a lot easier and the soil got cooler faster in the fall getting to the end of the season so watch what your growing in them. My tomatoes lasted a lot longer in ground than the ones I had in containers I wonder if that had anything to do with that? They don’t like cooler soil so maybe

  7. Fabric pots do something called root pruning bc the roots self prune due to that air exchange and the roots permitting some fabric pots. The plants don’t get root bound either. I would assume that’s what happens in a hanging basket nest too?

  8. Omg I didn’t know cloth pots were a thing 😓 that sucks I thought I invented something I’m kinda bummed out now.
…I bought a dying Hoya barely living in a swamp of over watered yuck. There’s literally no smell at all though not even earthy, but it full of green goo and white build up that scrapes of in chunks Idk what’s going on all Ik is it stew consistency And gross so I made it a lil hanging cloth pot so it could dry out and I could further inspect it before messing w the roots.

  9. We add wood chips to our pots to reduce the weight. At the end of the year, the pots are added to the compost pile, and use that for potting next year. Enjoyable videos, thanks.

  10. I grow lettuce in about a 6 inch container. I have seen one gardener on YouTube called Bubble Beet and he grows lettuce in a 4 inch container and it works for him. I get so much lettuce that I can't keep up with eating it. I also grow herbs in 4-6 inch diameter pots on the deck with my flowers and it has worked. And, yes, I go out every morning with hose in hand and check my plants if they need water. I also grow Nantes carrots in about 12" of soil and they grow great. The big Sterilite containers I use for Beans, Peas, Tomatoes, and Cucumbers and it works great. My bell peppers were not that good last year, I had planted 4 in one Sterilite container and I think the container was too big. This year I am going to try them in the half size Rubbermaid containers I have, hopefully that was the problem and this year they will be a lot better. I did have a 100 gallon grow bag type bed and it was amazing except I was a bit careless with my grass trimmer and sliced a 3 inch hole in the side of it. So this year I am going to put a plastic lawn border around it and hopefully I will be able to still use it and it won't happen again.

  11. Hi, I really your videos and after years of container gardening am learning a lot. One thing I do wonder about is how much soil to put in the big. I mainly tomatoes, peppers squash and cucumbers, but have also had mixed success with potatoes. Generally I fill the cloth bags about 2/3 full.

  12. Love all the info you pack into your videos. You say to use potting soil but others say to use potting mix. I know mix is usually lighter than soil but from what you're saying it sounds like soil would be better. Just started a container garden in western South Dakota this year and used different things including our own compost but I'm afraid that I haven't documented things well. Just having fun this year I guess!!
