Japanese garden lantern flickering LED retrofit

We purchased a cast concrete but pretty realistic looking Japanese garden lantern in a moving sale. Having lived in Japan for a few months, we knew these are actually used as lanterns, particularly at temples. Living in southern California, we didn’t want to be leaving real flames unattended, so, in the spirit of Hollywood, we decided to fake it. We were lucky to find a pretty realistic 96-LED, solar flickering tiki lamp we thought could be modified to work in the garden lantern. Here’s how we did it, and how it worked out.
