  1. One thing I had meant to say in this video is to not be confused about the garden methods, every year a new one is invented and there is no one right method for everyone. The one right method is what works for you and it may be the one you come up with for yourself.

  2. When I pick and eat a strawberry I usually put the top back in the strawberry pot. I had already set up a pretty big container garden for this year, and then all this stuff happened, so I ordered some extra seeds and I'm gonna have enough carrots and radishes to share with neighbors for most of the summer.

  3. This was exactly the information I needed to confidently start a garden. I've been a little apprehensive about starting one due to the fact we live in apartments with a tiny patio. I will definitely try the container method! One question, what are some good healthy ways to deter pests?Thank you so much Heidi for all your helpful information!

  4. Great info Heidi! I'm in Northern Nevada Reno area and seems our warm weather is always short lived. Have you grown food in the house by chance like winter? I was looking a grow lights but not sure what wattage is best, maybe Pat knows?… Thank you always❤️😬

  5. Another great video Heidi! So informative for all.Im not a new gardener but every year learn something new and exciting.Thank you for caring and taking the time to make this and encouraging us. Blessings on you and your family🦋

  6. Thanks for the encouragement! Today we went to home depot and bought some seeds, soil, and buckets. I've never apartment gardened, but…here goes. Idk how the landlady will appreciate, but I know I'm going to try. Its definitely hot enough and sunny enough here. Malabar spinach loves heat…betting I can vine it around the window with some help. Lol. Blessings from the island😇

  7. Heidi, you are right the stores are having issues getting in what they need, and they only give them what they think they need. I just talked to a store owner and that is what he told us. Heidi we do the same thing with our composting now.

  8. Crows are members of the Corvid family (Ravens, crows, magpies, and jays). If you like good reads you might like : Mind Of The Raven by Bernd Heinrich. Sounds like you already find them nifty. This book really makes them shine.

  9. Did the same thing, 10 years ago! Hard but a great yield. Have to do what you must!

  10. great tips for berries and how to use compost in the garden! thanks Heidi…I will use a lot of these ideas….did I mention that we may be coming back to the pnw to retire? =) I hardly want to say it out loud so I don't jinx anything!

  11. Heidi, so wise as usual and you are very observant – really helps in gardening. I was just told that the huge bakery overflow store is EMPTY. They can barely keep up with their store orders. A lot of people depended on that lower price for one day old bread. I think it will level out again in time. I don't shop for a lot and I am self isolating right now, but one last pickup tomorrow at Walmart and with their new distancing program, there will be no contact. Also, no contact at the gas station and gloves and mask. I now keep throw away gloves and face masks in my car and take every thing off when I enter the laundry room (right inside the garage) and put it all in the washer and then go and put clean clothes on. Expensive habit, but I have no immune system and am very old.

I just ordered two raised beds and got my mushroom and screened top soil mix today. It looks like black gold to me. Where I live, no one can grow carrots. So, that was the main reason I got them, but also I will have a lot more control over the environment underground – I think I win the world record for moles, voles and a smarty pants ground hog who is not the slightest bit afraid of me – so I spray stuff she doesn't like and she moves around. Trying to keep my buildings standing!

I have worked with a helper very hard the last 3 years trying to get a sustainable garden going and a more workable greenhouse (have a roof vent to put in this year) for year round gardening. It is a good greenhouse, but trial and error is really the best teacher. The books do not really cover exactly what happens to you and your greenhouse. There are so many factors involved. My herbs seem to be the most hardy outside and inside.

Your videos are so appreciated because it is not nice to only see gloom and doom with no advice when I look at youtube. When too much, I have certain channels that I watch to lighten up and you are one of the top ones.

  12. Thanks for the tips! When you put the "compost" in garden, how to avoid bugs and ants? Ingenius idea for crow treat. How kind of you. Thank you!

  13. Hello Heidi! Love the oldbies, made me laugh!! The 1st time I started my garden, I dug by hand as well, didn’t square it off cause I didn’t care, I just wanted a garden. Seeing the baby plants pop up, watching them produce vegetables, was well worth the sweat, aches and pains. Question, since tomatoes r acidic, I can put grass clippings around them?? Love ur tips and tricks!!! Thank u

  14. Thank you dear friend for all you do to help us in so many ways, your truly a blessing, love and blessings to you and Mr Rain

  15. Well, I’m not really looking to getting older but, I’d absolutely love to see how you make vinegar with orange peels. Do you have a video on how you do that? You have so many wonderful videos on your channel, almost too many to go through to look for just 1. I’m sure you’ve got a lot to do but if you could would let me know. Thanks. By the way, where do you reside, NW. Beautiful area there.

  16. Omg! I have crows too! A few years back we had a very rough winter and I fed them… they keep coming back. Your gardens are gorgeous!

  17. I have to get with the program. I have elderberries and blueberries coming and I still don’t know for sure where I’m going to plant them! Thanks for all of the good info Heidi! 😃

  18. Seattle here! Living in an apartment, and wanting to try a few things in containers. Glad I found your channel!

  19. I am kind of new to gardening. My husband fertilizes the grass several times a year. Is it ok to use it on plants in my garden? I just found you and have enjoyed listening and learning. Debbie

  20. Awesome video, Heidi! I am one who appreciates your gardening advice for northern climates even though I'm across the state from you and we are most often dry. After watching your bean video last year I made sure to order some of the ones you recommend and will be getting those started indoors next week. Our last frost date is May 15th but I think we'll be hitting that target earlier. Keep the great gardening videos coming, please! Thank you for keeping us all company during our 'stay at home' time.

  21. Good morning, Heidi. Thank you for the tips and encouragement to keep gardening. I live in Western Washington and have been learning to garden through trial and error. We have raised beds with cattle panel trellises, but I had a fairly sparse harvest last year due to lack of sunlight in our yard. Do you have any videos on your greenhouse or tips for what grows best in yards with only 3-5 hours of direct sun and an abundance of rain?

  22. Dad was my great garden teacher – unfortunately at the time I was not so very interested in gardening, however, I did absorb a lot (and may be inherited some of his green thumb); he never went by books, he just did and we had an abundance! Manure in the fall, though I will have to see if I can get some alpaca poop, that can go on any time. I also use the blood from meat when it thaws and leaves a puddle (in the plate), dilute it some and water my plants with it.
I am testing this year if my broccoli side shoots take root – never got broccoli last year though the plants were great; since we had a mild winter they kept growing and not put out an army of side shoots, so I cut the larger ones off and stuck them in a container, we shall see!
A crow to keep the dang squirrels at bay? squirrel totally messed up my one garlic bed it was even semi covered! The stray cat that comes around (yup I feed that one on occasion, looks well fed though) keeps the bunnies away a bit.
    Blessed gardening and video making!!!!

  23. My MOTTO is to plant a seed or plant daily. Then you will have plenty of food! Experiment is the only way to learn. Thanks for your tips! Rhonda

  24. I have zucchini yellow squash onions cucumbers herbs purple hull peas okra tomatoes I have a compost I been doin for years

  25. Mrs Rain please help. I planted some Echinacea bulbs a few weeks ago. I haven't seen any growth so I decided to dig the hole up, no bulbs /roots to be font.  I live in the south and it does not seem to be dug up by any animals. Do you have any ideas to what could have happened? Thanks

  26. We are considering a move to NW Oregon, possibly Astoria. Would much of your Youtubes also be relevant climate-wise to that region? I am guessing so. We are keen to homestead 1-2 acres .

  27. Thank you so much for your gardening tips and insight on starting gardens. I had many successes and some failures. It is definitely a learning experience. I have learned so much from you. I have also learned that I shouldn’t envy someone else for what they have produced and I couldn’t. I thank God for everything that I am able to harvest on a daily basis. Take care.

  28. I have bad luck with gas engines that sit unused all year. So if I am only going to till once per year, or once every two to three years, I'll go to the local equipment yard and rent a tiller. Let them worry about gummed up carburetors, ethanol rust and all that mess.
