Japanese Garden

Planting the Front Zen Area – Part One | Our Japanese Garden Escape

This video looks at factors that make up a traditional Japanese Zen garden, such as large boulders, rocks, gravel and earth. We discuss the landscaping of these elements and begin the process of planting within the Zen area.

Plants mentioned in this video:
Japanese holly – Ilex crenata – evergreen
Portuguese laurel – Prunus lusitanica – evergreen
European red pine or Scots pine – Pinus sylvestris – evergreen

We are in a climate/hardiness zone 6 and all plants above are growing well in our garden.

  1. Pines grow best in extremely free draining soil, add a lot of grit to the soil around them. I've grown pine bonsai in pure grit. Nice vid.

  2. We absolutely LOVE your channel. We too are also in Zone 6 and trying to build our Japanese Garden. Can you tell me where you are located? Hardiness zones don’t always tell about soil quality and water. We are on a VERY Rocky soil. I would love to know where you are- Thank you!
