Edible Forest Gardening In Practice



A tour of an edible forest garden we created this year. Here we have done a lasagne method of layering organic material to build soil. We put the time in to do this because the area was not going to be watered. The mulch material will help hold water in the soil and create a buffer for weather extremes. This has meant the young plants have thrived after nearly 8 weeks without rain and no watering.

  1. i got hold of a ton of cardboard (boxes from a fruit and veg market) put it on the soil in a double (sometimes triple) layer, and covered it in 5cm of compost. Leave it a few days, then plant things by punching a hole through the cardboard and plugging the roots into the soil below. It makes an incredible garden. The worms love the cardboard I believe.
