Wouldnt rototilling do the same thing?
Thank you for your comment. To answer your question: rototilling creates a hardpan just below the level reached by the tines, caused by your weight and the weight of the tiller. Tilling typically loosens 8-12" of soil, double digging loosens 20" of soil. This lets you plant much closer together, as plant roots grow straight down rather than hitting the hardpan and growing sideways into each other.
it is a lot of work but you are right it pays for it self for months to come
