Container Gardening

Oak ROOTS Took Over Our Container Garden!

Oak tree roots have taken over the container garden. The 2 greenhouses we built will take the place of these containers. It was time to clean up the area and add the dirt to our pond dirt to create soil for next year.

  1. To prevent invasion one needs to provide an air brake to prevent the roots from growing. I put 4 pots on a pallet. Works like a charm.

  2. Morning Y'all , busy as usual on the homestead, does my heart good, I look forward to the time when I can work on our property all day too , Thank You for sharing your lives with us, we enjoy each morning!

  3. I thought bending to work on your plants will never ever be a bother to you in this life, as you look so fit, so strong and seems like you gonna be like that till the end.
Thanks for the tip on not planting under trees with a block to prevent the roots.

  4. I have the same problem with oak tree roots here in Florida. They took over my garden and I started growing in pots but they took over some of them until I got wise enough to put them up on something.

  5. I have to put pots in my container garden on pallets or the silver maples grow up from the bottom and nab all the good soil. Absolutely fills the buckets from the bottom.

  6. I had the same thing happen, only with camphor tree roots. I'm in a suburb and the roots are also invading my garden. Really hard to deal with.

  7. I don't know how it could be so different up north that wood chip beds actually work. Personally I believe they turned it into a religion of suffrage. Suffer through the worst gardening method ever envisioned because it's "God's method"

  8. Morning Danny and Wanda ,you guys are always busy doing something. Glad you had help with those pots. Wes is sweet man for helping. Glad you have that tractor that helps you a lot also you two stay so fit . Hope you weren't breathing in too much of that dust thats not good for your lungs and working around all that dirt dumping it. I know I sound like an old mother hen LOL !! wish I could get some of those pots too far away for me. I'll stick to just using my totes. God bless you both stay well, from here in Indiana🙏👍❤

  9. A real good video

Wisteria and mullberry will take your pots too talk more about the grafting. I dont understand the concept i also do a lot of ffuit trees figs peache pears e.t
    C. Thank yoy again watch all of your videos. God bless you and wanda.

  10. I have a very similar problem with our compost pile. Oak roots all through it, not really sure how to fix this…

  11. Every seedling is a new and different variety. Until it fruits, it’s a mystery that can’t be evaluated.

  12. Danny, I just found your channel. I garden in nw Florida and my old tiller just died. Do you have any brand recommendations? I have sand and 3 plots that total about 5000 square feet. Thanks for any advice, Donna in PC

  13. Wow I never knew that about oak trees! I was getting ready to set up containers for winter squashes next season and we live in Oakliegh Forest, yes so we’re loaded with trees. I will make sure to raise them up on blocks. Thank you 🙏

  14. What do you do with the soil that has the Fire Ants in it please ? In Australia we aren't allowed to move or disturb any soil that has been contaminated with Fire Ants- our restrictions are very severe. Great video Danny I really enjoyed it. Cheers Denise- Australia

  15. I just put a raised bed 10 feet from an oak tree, now I'm feeling frustrated knowing that tree is going to steal all the nutrients from my garden. Ugh 😩. Anyway what did you say was in the pot with the multiplying onions? It sounded like chamber bitter but I'm not 100% sure. Is that the fern looking weed? I have a ton of that on my property and I'm curious to learn more about it.

  16. I was worried you were overdoing it pulling those filled buckets up to put on the tractor. Glad you have good neighbors to help out! Good southern folk down there for sure!!

  17. I’ve grown in big pots like those & also in plastic food grade barrels cut in half. I usually drilled holes in the sides of the half barrels vs on the bottom. But as you know those barrels usually have bungholes on the top. And that top half became a pot too. And I didn’t have all the plugs so I merely covered open holes with a thick plastic to hold the soil in. The soil did stay in but roots sure found the water that seeped out the bottom & then made their way in. Even had some tiny roots worm their way in by a plug that apparently wasn’t as tight as it should have been. But lesson learned!

  18. Yikes🥺 I’m a suburban small gardener and I just ordered Grow bags and plastic containers 😩… I had a location near trees NOW you’ve given me something to THINK ABOUT! Thanks so much for sharing. Back to rethink my locations👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

  19. I had oriental poppies escape through the holes in their pots. They rooted into the ground and came back yearly. Tarps two layers staked down beneath the pots has worked well. I have blackberries that do that like your oaks.
