Edible Garden – Making an Organic Raised Bed with Companion Planting, Natural & Low Cost

🌎 My Story:
https://me.beelifewithdebby.com/

I am making a small polyculture garden today and decided, why not share it? Applying Easy Permaculture principles to create an Edible Garden here in Costa Rica. These techniques, you can apply anywhere, you might only have to look at what organic materials you have available in your region. It is low cost, made from natural materials with minimal tools (just a shovel and some muscle power).

Welcome to my Costa Rica garden! I will apply companion planting in an organic raised bed that not only looks beautiful but will also provide you with a sustainable garden that positively impacts the ecosystem. I do not use any (chemical) additions or (mined) resources that have been extracted elsewhere from the earth. I try to practice Permaculture wherever I go and create my own soil from animal manure (I prefer horse manure), kitchen waste and any organic material that is around (like dead leaves, anything you need to cut down or cut back etc). When I don’t have enough compost myself I will source organic local compost and manure from neighbors. As I haven’t moved to costa Rica that long ago this is what I did for this bed as I am just starting out with the garden here (where I previously have designed and planted a whole food forest and different annual gardens).

Polyculture Planting: by planting different edible and non edible plants together in a mixed bed you will diversify your garden space and enriching the ecosystem in a more natural way. Different flowers and plants will attract predators that will manage any potential ‘pests’ and you will also be able to enjoy the bees and butterflies you attract including those important pollinators!

Companion Planting: by putting plants together that ‘like’ each other and are not competing for the same nutrients, you can actually obtain a better yield and stronger, healthier plants. There are many charts for companion planting to be found on the internet and in this video I am planting my peppers and tomatoes with basil and parsley. Parsley encourages the growth of the plants around it and basil deters pests and enhances the taste of the tomatoes and peppers!

Natural materials:
As a border I used logs from fallen trees in the forest and stones that I can find all around here. I just stacked them and only one side it needed to be held together so we wrapped some forest vine around it put one stick in the ground that’s enough to prevent the log from potentially rolling forward. I find it looks beautiful and gives such a natural look & feel to the garden :). No need for expensive materials. And yes over time you might have to replace the border but this will hold quite a while.
