Come with us for a tour of Heather and Jon’s permaculture front yard. There are many different definitions of “permaculture” but they all focus on mimicking natural ecological principles to create more resilient and sustainable landscapes. Heather and Jon’s permaculture yard features rainwater collection swales, a mix of hardy perennials and annual vegetables, effective use of mulch, and more!
Heather and Jon have been working on converting their yard into a more productive, self-sustaining, and species-diverse garden for over 10 years. Their garden underwent a major transformation during the spring of 2014 when they hosted a Permablitz, a volunteer-powered yard transformation organized by the Permaculture Research Institute of Saskatchewan. As novice gardeners, every season is a new adventure as they learn more about their little ecosystem.
This tour represents the Permaculture category as part of the 2020 Virtual Passport Garden Tour, a 12-day tour through some of Saskatoon’s notable gardens.
